My NON Erotica Literary Inspirtations
So I thought I would list a few authors that I have enjoyed over the years, that may or may not have influenced my own writing style. I am still in the process of finding my own unique "voice" as an author. But I do enjoy the works of some other past greats as well.
My tastes run most heavily towards the fantasy and the fiction to be sure. High Epic Fantasy series have always been my favorites.
Tolkein
C.S Lewis
Robert Jordan (The Wheel of Time series is my most read...4 times through the entire epic already)
Brandon Sanderson
Jacqueline Carey (Kushiel's series is Awesome!)
George R. R. Martin (Who doesn't love ASoIaF!)
Terry Goodkind
Neil Gaiman (this man is a genius! I especially love his Dr. Who episodes as well)
I also really really enjoy AFAM lit. Or, for those of us who didn't study it in college African American Literature.
James Baldwin (Giovanni's Room is a masterpiece...I read it several times a year)
Nella Larson
Toni Morrison
Alice Walker
Octavia Butler ( Kindred...man, I love that book!)
Suzan-Lori Parks
Then, I love historical fiction...almost any kind.
Gone With the Wind
Memoirs of a Geisha
Les Miserables
Tale of Two Cities (lot of Dickens in general, lol)
The Mists of Avalon
I love anything Arthurian. Anything historical fiction around the War of the Roses, the rise of the Tudors, and on into the Death of Henry VIII into Elizabeth I, I love love love.
That's a decent list so far right?
And of course, I have a soft spot of all of the classics. Well for most of them (For some reason, I have never enjoyed the Great Gatsby...I've tried and tried, and it's just not my cup of tea)
But Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, all the female novelists of that time period, I do enjoy them a lot.
And, being Southern, I will always love both Faulkner ( A Light in August is a defining work of my adolescence, had a profound effect on me) and, of course, Twain.
I hope that gives you all a little deeper glimpse into what I read. or have read. On the non-erotica side of the spectrum.
All the best,
D A Mackey
